Data notes & sources

Model generations and major refreshes from 2015, with storage, color and configurable chip variants grouped. P5 and P8.4 playback follow the supplied model rules: iPhone 8 / X onward; iPads introduced since 2017 except the sixth and seventh generations; Macs from iMac Pro (December 2017) onward; Apple TV from 2017; both Vision Pro models. Compatible OS versions are required.

P8.4 capture follows the supplied rule: iPhone 12 lineup onward, excluding iPhone SE (3rd generation); all other product families are unsupported. P10.0 and P10.4 use the supplied support list and AV1 hardware requirement. P10.1 is unsupported.

P8.1 requires both P5 support and compatibility with the specified OS: tvOS 17 (September 2023) or iOS / macOS 26.4 (March 2026), using Apple's OS compatibility lists. Apple TV HD (2015) is therefore excluded. P20 uses iOS 17 / macOS Sonoma compatibility and the supplied October 2023 profile date, plus both Vision Pro models. Newer device generations are included by inference; these are not independent playback tests. P8.1 support on both Apple Vision Pro models (M2 and M5) was confirmed by the user on October 19, 2026; the existing June 2026 visionOS support start is retained.

Provisional iPad assumption: the matching iPadOS versions apply, so P8.1 uses iPadOS 26 compatibility from March 2026, restricted to P5-supported models, and P20 uses iPadOS 17 compatibility from October 2023. P20 is unsupported on Apple TV HD, as confirmed by the user on October 19, 2026. P20 on Apple TV 4K is partial / uncertain, not fully supported; its timeline retains the previously supplied January 2024 start pending clarification. OS compatibility checked September 18, 2026.

Added models outside tvOS use Apple's published AV1 specifications with the supplied P10 rule; their P10 support is inferred, not independently tested. Apple TV 4K (4th generation, 2026) is the first Apple TV with a hardware AV1 decoder; AV1 capability alone does not establish Dolby Vision P10 support, so the existing tvOS profile rules still apply. Original hardware references checked September 17, 2026; Mac mini (2026), Mac Studio (2026), and Apple TV 4K (4th generation) references checked October 19, 2026.

Dates are first retail availability in the initial launch markets, not announcement or pre-order dates. Grouped chip configurations use the model family's earliest availability. Future dates reflect Apple's published availability as of October 19, 2026. Each model's details link to its date source.

Device outlines from Apple SF Symbols, used consistently by hardware design. Model generations begin in 2015 and run oldest to newest within each family. A month-only date means the exact first delivery day has not been recorded.
